Well, as seems to be the case in most off-seasons of late, Xavier's break from hoops started off rough this year. Semaj declared for the NBA, Justin Martin announced he will transfer out, and (erroneous) rumors swirled about Chris Mack leaving. Thankfully the Mack rumors were all garbage. Coach Mack is still here and he welcomes his top-15 rated 2014 recruiting class to join Matt Stainbrook, Dee Davis, and the Muskies this fall.
Ronnie Johnson (Purdue PG who announced he will transfer) toured Xavier's campus last week so he is certainly a contender for the final scholarship spot this fall. (See the "Info On Your Muskies" page to see the scholarship breakdown) He would have to sit out the year, per transfer rules, and then have 2 years of eligibility left. There are some, but not many, 2014 high school and prep school grads that could fill that last spot but that is not likely. The final option would be to not fill the spot, giving Mack an extra scholly to work with next year.
The other interesting news of late is that the team will be traveling Brazil to play some exhibition games from August 3rd to August 12th. A trip to another country will be exciting for the guys and hopefully will give them a lot of time to bond and become a closer team.
We'll keep you posted on recruiting news and all things Xavier this summer. Tomorrow night is a Season Ticket Holder Fan Night at Cintas Center where fans can talk to Coach Mack and the team and socialize with each other out on the court. Can't beat that. Go Muskies!
